BEGINNER FIELD GUIDE

Create a Visual Identity for Your Small Business

Create a simple visual identity for your small business. Choose colours, fonts and a consistent direction for your website with this beginner project.

Inspiration photography; your finished result will vary. Material budgets are estimates in USD, not live prices.

Let’s get started.

  1. Write a one-sentence promise: what you help people do and why it matters. Choose three words that describe the tone you want, such as practical, warm or precise.
  2. Collect three references for composition, colour or typography. Use them to identify preferences; do not copy another company’s logo or distinctive artwork.
  3. Choose a neutral background, a readable text colour and one accent. Check contrast rather than assuming a colour has the same emotional meaning for every audience.
  4. Choose a readable font family and make a simple text-based logo. Test it at the small size it will appear on a phone.
  5. Make one sample homepage graphic in a tool you own, or explore Adobe Express. View it at mobile size and remove text or detail that is difficult to read. Keep a record of your colours, fonts and image licences.

A coherent starting point is enough. Paid software is optional for this exercise. Use licensed images and fonts, and check their permitted commercial uses.
